Raiatea is the second largest island in French Polynesia and the most important of the Leeward Islands. Commonly regarded as the flagship of their tradition and culture, Raiatea is known to Polynesian peoples as the Sacred Island. It is home to the largest ceremonial complex in Polynesia, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And as if that weren’t sufficiently alluring, you will get a great view of the turquoise water of its immense lagoon and the natural majesty of its interior landscape when you fly over the island before landing.

As it is located in the middle of the Leeward Islands, the most common way to get to Raiatea is by air from any of the numerous islands that make up the Society archipelago. You will find it easy to get a flight because Raiatea is an important administrative center. At roughly 91 square miles, you will almost certainly need to get a rental car – at a cost of around $60 a day – to explore the island.
