Discover Nuku Hiva

Located to the northwest of French Polynesia, Nuku Hiva is one of the best-known of the Marquesas Islands. It is also called the Land of Men due to its long history of struggles, colonization and the expansion of its culture throughout the entire Pacific region.

Nuku Hiva is a land of legends and mythology that originated in the island’s beautiful valleys where, until just over a century ago, the various tribes that inhabited them made war on each other and where cannibalism was a deep-rooted part of the people’s culture. The art of tattooing – called Patutiki – is just as firmly rooted in the Marquesan culture of Nuku Hiva, where it is more deeply entrenched than on any other island in Polynesia.

The island has a unique charm. It could well be the setting for an episode of the Jurassic Park saga and is also full of tikis, the ancient sculptures of Polynesia’s historical and cultural heritage. Tiki Tuhiva, the largest female tiki ever created – from which there is a wonderful panoramic view of Taiohae Bay – can also be visited in the capital.

Things to do in Nuku Hiva

Both the landscapes and the history of the island are spectacular. Taking the Vaipo Waterfall route that provides a unique sunset in the lonely Hakaui Bay is a must. The place itself is formidable and the natural setting ravishing. A route by car (which must be an AWD vehicle) to visit the valleys and bays of Taipivai, Hatiheu, Anaho and Hatuatua is highly recommended. Along the way you can explore the Kamuihei, Tahakia and Te'ipoka historical complex located on both sides of the road. The capital Taiohae is also worth a visit since it is full of maraes (Polynesian ceremonial centers). There is also a striking and very charming cathedral with a San Pedro in the purest Polynesian style. Nuku Hiva is spectacular. Here are some personal recommendations

Map of Nuku Hiva

Nuku Hiva is literally “in the middle of nowhere”. Specifically, it is about 870 miles from Tahiti and about 2,175 miles from Easter Island, with which it has historically been closely related. The usual means of travel – both to move between archipelagos and among the Marquesas Islands themselves – is by air. The island is not especially extensive but there is no road that circumnavigates it. There are, however, interior roads that are often unpaved. The 28.5 miles that separate the airport from the capital Taiohae, for example, take approximately an hour by car. This means that private transport is essential. This map shows the island’s most interesting features for your trip.
