Discover Moorea

Moorea is located a mere 18.6 miles from Tahiti, its sister island, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and it was a place of refuge for Tahitian warriors for many years. It is the third biggest island in French Polynesia and is of volcanic origin, like the others. In this case, Mount Rotui, the highest peak, is the most spectacular of all. With Cook Bay on one side and Opunohu Bay on the other, it is a photographer’s dream.

Moorea has extremely varied landscapes with wild routes that run through ancient archaeological sites immersed in the jungle and adjacent to beaches from which Tahiti can be seen in the distance. They include Temae beach, where you can hear the surface activity of the humpback whales at night during September, October and November.

The following section provides all the important information about Moorea: pictures, what to see, what to do and a host of other things.

Map of Moorea

You can get there by sea or air. Air Tahiti is the inter-island airline. The flight will cost you an average of around $90. The duration of the flight from the Faa'a International Airport in Tahiti to Tema'e Airport in Moorea is only 10 minutes! There are various flights throughout the day so you have plenty of leeway for improvisation. You can also fly to other islands such as Huahine, Raiatea and Bora Bora from Moorea with Air Tahiti. As mentioned above, you can also travel between islands by boat. There are several catamaran sailings per day between Moorea’s Vai'are dock and Papeete. The trip takes about 30 minutes and – as at the airport – there is a taxi service at the ports. It is one of the easier islands to get around. We recommend travelling by motorbike but you also have the option of renting a car or even an electric bike to enjoy the scenery. There is also a public bus but it is impossible to say how long you will have to wait for it. Hitchhiking is also a well-established custom on the island. This map shows the island’s most interesting features for your trip.
