Description of the activity

Hiva Oa is home to the Marquesas Islands’ most important archaeological site. It is wrapped in mythology and astonishing mysteries; undoubtedly worth a visit.

You will probably stay in Autuona, the capital, and make the excursion to the island from there. As could be expected, there is more than one site to visit but the most essential archaeological sites are located in the extreme northeast where the Great Tiki and the Female Tiki can be seen in Puamau. An open-air archeological museum.

In addition to learning about the history of the island you will be able to enjoy the beauty of the coastline with its black sand beaches. You and your companions will be practically the only ones there.

Useful information

You will need an AWD vehicle to tour the island. Once past the airport you will encounter stretches of dirt road. If you like driving you can rent a suitable vehicle but we would advise you to let someone else do the driving while you sit back and enjoy the scenery, especially in the northernmost part where you have to follow the coastline.

So we recommend taking a guided tour for the simple reason that the best places to view the scenery are not easy to find.
