Discover Hiva Oa

Hiva Oa is a small island in the northeast of French Polynesia. It is located in the archipelago of the Marquesas Islands. It is known both for its ancient history – thanks to its important archaeological sites such as the Marae Lipona – and for being the final resting place of the post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin and the singer-songwriter and actor Jacques Brel.

Hiva Oa is an island full of nooks and crannies to be explored, among which almost everyone visits the Smiling Tiki – also known as the spectacled Tiki – or the largest original Female Tiki in Polynesia. You can also take the opportunity to have a dip on the nearby Puamau beach with its amazing black sand. Here are some personal recommendations

The island is divided into two regions, one to the northwest called Puamau where the main archaeological sites are located, and Atuona, the capital. The latter is located in the south and is where you will probably be lodged. From there you can explore the island by car or even take one of the small boats to the nearby islands of Tatu Hiva and Tahuata that can be seen from the coast. The airport is found in the center of the island about 4 miles from Atuona
