Description of the activity

Diving in waters with amazing visibility and being surrounded by hundreds of sharks is absolutely unforgettable.

Diving in Fakarava takes place in the atoll’s two channels: Garuae, the north channel, and Tumakohua or Tetamanu, the south channel. Scuba diving can also be arranged in the two channels of Taeo, the atoll located to the north of Fakarava. There is a total of 15 diving spots to choose from!

Fakarava atoll is suitable for all diving levels. The groups are formed of people with similar skill levels and experience. The depth may vary between 20 and 164 feet. It is also important to note that visibility is excellent down to between 65 to 130 feet.

The best time to dive in Fakarava is from October to March when the water conditions are ideal.

Useful information

The following are the most iconic species observed when diving in Fakarava:

Grey, silvertip and blacktip sharks all year round. The peak time for these sharks in Fakarava is June-July and January-February in the mornings.

If you are a fan of the hammerhead and tiger sharks you will be delighted to know that they can be spotted from October to March, although January and February are the best months to see them during a dive.

The humpback whale season starts in July and lasts until the first week of November. The best time is from September to October because there is less wind and a greater concentration of whales.
The schools of snappers that gather during the week prior to the new moon from October to March are an amazing sight.

Mating groupers is a famous event in Fakarava’s waters. June and July are best months to observe them. Hundreds of groupers congregate to spawn in the south channel. This awesome sight can be seen in the mornings and when there is a full moon during the aforesaid months.

You will also be able to see the humphead wrasse or Napoleon fish, barracuda, tuna and other pelagic (that is, fish found at moderate depths) or surface species such as manta rays, swordfish, turtles, etc. throughout the year.

About the scuba diving company

We had four very nice dives both in the south and north channels. The company provides an extremely professional service. And this is important because you don’t get to travel to Fakarava every day.
